Creating With Intention

Thursday 16th May 2024 | Episode Seven Preview

A conscious creative process will always be a consistent journey of finding balance between cohesion and curiosity. Having a strong and bright intention for your creative process is deeply, deeply important, as your intention will be that gentle guiding light holding you through the darkness, difficulties and challenges of bringing your ideas and creations into fruition.

I believe that intentions are the foundation for your creative process. Intentions are a declaration. A commitment and a dedication to crafting and creating a desired outcome. They can be written in the form of an affirmation or mantra, and I would personally recommend having only one to three intentions for a specific creative project. While intentions can be practical goals and centred on completing a specific project, I also believe that the true power of intention lies in nurturing a desired feeling or experience. I believe that intentions are focussed on the journey as well as the result.

Intentions can also be defined as a goal or a purpose. However, there is a reason I consciously choose to use the word “intention” as opposed to “goal” when referring to the creative process or to our creative energy in general. When beginning with a new client in my creative coaching space, the first coaching session is always dedicated to intention setting. The reason I choose to use the word “intention” as opposed to “goal” is because I personally feel that there is a fixed energy and more of a sense of rigidness around the word “goal”. Some of the synonyms for “goal” include “objective”, “end”, and “target”, words that imply a harsh and narrow focus on achieving one outcome or one possibility. While there is nothing wrong with this, when it comes to working with our creative energy I feel we need to be more flexible in our approach.

On the other hand, I feel there is an essence of softness and openness around the word “intention”. With intentions you are leaving room for variables. You are leaving room for spontaneity, for surprise. You are leaving room for magic.

Through intention setting you are creating space for more possibilities to arise beyond what you can initially anticipate or comprehend. Intentions loosely define an expansive and adaptable energetic environment in which you have the freedom and support to create within. I love to think of this as supported spaciousness, which is one of the newer values I’m leaning into within my soul work and coaching offerings.

This sense of supported spaciousness can be epitomised with these beautiful words from Virginia Woolf, “I am rooted, but I flow. If you think about it… with too much freedom your creative process will have no direction or focus, and your purpose will become lost and confused. A strong intention will provide you with an anchor, offering you a powerful foundation to not only start exploring and creating and growing from, but also to return to whenever you feel overwhelmed, fearful, uncomfortable, or are confronted with any other challenging emotions.

A rooted intention will allow your creative process to feel wonderfully fluid and flexible, while also flourishing from a devotional and committed place.

Intentions are the root of a cyclical, creative deepening. They are there to be continuously returned to. They are a source of sanctuary through the resistance and grittiness, and they are a place to settle when you are in need of rest and clarity and strength. Intentions are the true heart of your creative journey.
